McPhadden acknowledged that his secret was out and revealed that his goal as well as how his grieving mother still refuses to believe her late husband's guilt and is convinced that he was set up, despite Mike's attempts to show her otherwise.
Regardless, Frank considered taking his badge, not because of his ties but because of how he lied on his identity, which is worthy of termination. However, he ended up deciding to just discipline Mike but allowing him to remain a cop. This decision was made with the help of his grandson Joseph Hill, Joe's son, who met with Mike and the two were able to relate on legacies their father left behind.
