Maria Baez is a Detective in the New York City Police Department. She is part of the Major Case Squad, serving at the 54th Precinct. Her current partner is Daniel Reagan. Prior to working with him, she spent three years on a joint robbery task force working with the FBI until Commissioner Reagan disbanded it. Maria has a close friendship with Daniel Reagan, knowing him for 20 years.

Biography

Born around the early 1980s, Baez grew up in New York City with her mother (Carmen), sister (Ana), and brother (Javier). When she was ten years old, Baez witnessed the murder of a local boy by a drug trafficker named Octavio Nunez. However (along with all those in her neighborhood, including her family), Baez was too afraid to say anything at the time. Around twenty five years later, Baez was able to use her status as a detective to hold Nunez accountable for his criminal actions.

In school, Baez and Javier were best friends. He often protected Baez from bullies, and stayed back a grade for him and Baez to be in the same classes. Eventually, their relationship changed when he began using drugs. She eventually severed contact with Javier because of his drug use and they didn't speak for two years. Since then, she has been disappointed and angry with Javier, blaming him for their parents splitting up.

Career

Baez was promoted to Detective 3rd Grade by the age of twenty five. At some point in 2003, Baez met Daniel Reagan and formed a friendship with him. According to the episode Protest Too Much, they have been friends for ten years. Prior to transferring to the 54th Precinct, Baez was part of a joint task force with the FBI for three years. During her time in the task force, Baez investigated bank robberies. After the task force was disbanded by Commissioner Reagan, she was assigned to Detective Reagan. The two have formed a solid partnership and even a friendship since then; not only as friends, but Baez has (in some ways at least) become part of the Reagan family. Baez is a competent detective, doing her best to keep Detective Reagan in line. Despite this, it doesn't stop her from following him in his actions and standing by his side.

Relationships

Since having a relationship Jimmy Mosley, Baez hasn't been in any serious relationships. She dated a detective part of the narcotics division. Currently Baez is not in a long-term relationship. At one point, she thought she and Jimmy Mosley could possibly be together again. However, she discovered he was seeing another officer at the same time.

In 2022[1], Baez adopted a newborn baby girl, Elena[2] Baez, whose biological mother Elena Marquez was murdered by a bomb planted on the orders of Arturo Muñoz. At the time of her murder, Marquez was supposed to be in witness protection while preparing to testify against Muñoz, but had left to check on her mother.
