John "Jack" Boyle is a defense attorney and the husband of Erin Reagan. Jack and Erin married on two separate occasions. Their first marriage to each other ended in divorce, but years later, they reconcile and remarried. They have one daughter together, Nicky Reagan-Boyle. Jack originally came across as cocky and narcissistic and was not well liked by his ex-in-laws.

Biography[]

In 2012, Jack attended Nicky's sixteenth birthday while also opposing Erin in court. He eventually lost the case but told Erin he may move back to New York to stay. Erin told him not to make promises to Nicky that he may not keep.[1]

In January 2013, Daniel Reagan was framed for a crime he didn't commit. Jack, at Henry Reagan's request, agreed to represent Danny but not before warning Henry and Francis Xavier Reagan to stay out of the way. The situation was resolved and Danny was exonerated.[2]

In October 2013, Jack told Erin happily that he had gotten Nicky concert tickets and doesn't understand why Erin was upset until she told him she had already gotten Nicky tickets and wanted it to be a surprise. Jack got annoyed and asked Erin for a list of things "Jack can do right." Later, Jack ended up defending a murder suspect in a trial that Erin was prosecuting. The suspect, Delgado, was a federal informant who murdered a father when he discovered that drugs were being smuggled through the ship yard where he worked. Jack attempted to get the witness identification thrown out in a preliminary hearing but the judge ruled on the prosecution's side. Delgado got desperate and grabbed one of the guards' guns and held Jack, Erin and the rest of the courtroom hostage. After Erin was shot in the shoulder, Jack helped her by applying pressure to her wound and comforting her. The situation was resolved after Danny managed to shoot Delgado when he attempted to remove Erin and use her as leverage to manipulate the police. Jack later went to Erin's apartment with flowers. They kiss and then go upstairs together.[3]

In early 2014, Erin broke off their relationship as she realized Jack wanted to have all the "fun parts" without Erin's idea of commitment because he knew it would end horribly wrong because he was a defense attorney, Erin came from a family of cops, and his daughter with Erin, Nicky, wanted to be a cop, which meant him marrying her would result in their family facing both humiliation and scrutiny for it.[4]

Relationships[]

Jack and Erin have been divorced for some time, although it is clear that they still care for each other. Jack often comes to Erin for advice and assistance, and Erin even once invited Jack to Sunday dinner at the Reagan home.[5] In the final episode, "End of Tour", Erin and Jack make plans to get married again.

Jack also has a close relationship with his daughter, Nicky.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Jack and Erin's first marriage was at Morgan Hall. Erin now considers the place bad luck.[6]
  • Erin was originally a defense attorney like Jack, and they worked in the same office (presumably this is where they met). When Erin left to become a prosecutor, Jack had difficulty handling it. This may have been the reason for their original divorce.
