NYPD Detective

The duties of an NYPD detective vary based on his assigned unit. A narcotics detective’s daily routine is different than one working in homicide. But all NYPD detectives perform investigative work, including interviewing suspects and witnesses, conducting surveillance, collecting evidence, completing various reports, making arrests and testifying. A detective is a discretional promotion made after an officer has served on patrol for several years and a minimum of 18 months in an investigative unit. The rank progresses from third grade to first grade.
