Recap
Detailed recap of the episode which contains MAJOR SPOILERS. |
Nicky and Frank are having a conversation at a sundae parlor. Although Frank tells Nicky he does not want the conversation to be interrupted by Nicky's phone, DCPI Garrett Moore interrupts the conversation, and informs Frank that a cop has been shot at the North End Bus Yard. Garrett does not have any other information other than "whoever's down is a detective from Danny's precinct". Jamie, clearly worried, is unable to reach Danny by phone. He then receives a call from Linda, saying that Danny is okay, as he is working on a case on Murray Hill. She then asks Jamie to let Erin and Henry know that he is OK. At St. Benjamin's hospital, Garret tells Frank that, according to Chief of Department Dino Arbogast, Detective Steve Tomlin, the cop who is shot, has been working undercover for the past year in a drug operation runned by Santo Castillo. Garret also hears that even after Tomlin was shot, he was still able to shoot Castillo back. The doctor walks out, and tells Frank that Detective Tomlin has died. Frank wishes to speak to Tomlin's wife. As Garrett provides information on Tomlin's wife, Lorraine, she arrives at the hospital, and is devastated when the doctor tells her the bad news . Frank approaches Lorraine, offers her words of condolences, and says "anything we can do to help, you only need to ask". Lorraine wants the NYPD to catch who is responsible, and Frank agrees to do that. Dino waits for his boss's arrival at 1PP, but the latter is disappointed to know that Castillo has not been caught. Dino also tells Frank that, despite injured, Castillo has not appeared in any ERs in the tri-state, and that half of the department are volunteering to find him. Frank is also informed that Sergeant Gormley assigned the best detective he has got on the case. A team led by Danny raids a drug den, while everyone inside are destroying the evidence. None on scene claims to know who Castillo is, including Ticky, who was trying to wash cocaine down the drain when he is apprehended by Baez. All of them are taken to precinct. Erin and Richard walk out of Hell's Kitchen. As Richard goes get the car, Erin is approached by a boy who claims needing help. Although Erin says she does not have spare change, this boy wants a different kind of help, and tries to take something out of his pocket. Erin then recognizes this boy as Tyler Jeffries, a classmate of Nicky. This boy denies being him, and runs away as Erin's car arrives. At the precinct, Baez instructs officers to detain the arrested separately. Gormley asks Danny if he needs help, as there are cops from 12 precincts willing to interrogate those arrested. Gormley warns Danny that Castillo's men are known for their usual loyalty. Danny responds by getting Castillo's family involved, but Gormley tells him that Castillo made his sister change her name to avoid the situation. Erin returns home, and is surprised to see his daughter doing her homework. Erin then asks Nicky about Tyler Jeffries. Although Nicky speaks highly of him, she says they are no longer classmates for about five months. She reveals that Tyler's mom sent him to a school in Upstate New York, because he is suspected of using drugs. Erin says that she saw Tyler in Hell's Kitchen, and he seems unwell. Clearly concerned, Nicky wants to go find Tyler. But Erin says she is calling Child Services, and tells Nicky to relax. After interrogating those arrested at the drug den, Danny and Baez both realize none of them was willing to talk. As Baez goes to make coffee, Gormley asks Danny to be his witness for opening Tomlin's locker, and to collect his belongings for family. When Gormley cuts the lock and opens he locker, he discovers that Tomlin's locker is completely empty. Danny confirms that he saw Tomlin started his tour the day before his death, and that his locker was full of things in it, including his uniform, pictures and papers. Danny and Gormley believe that the locker must have been cleaned out after Tomlin's death. At 1 PP, Frank laments the number of officers killed in the line of duty during his tenure as PC. Garrett offers to write Frank's funeral speech on his behalf, but Frank declines, believing that it is a job that cannot be delegated. Dino enters the room, informing that Tomlin's locker was emptied the night before. Garrett fails to appreciate the significance of this, but Dino emphasizes the gravity of tampering. Garrett suggests if there is a mole, but Frank has an even more sinister theory: someone may be covering for Tomlin. Frank also tells Garrett this cannot be handled quietly at the precinct level. Jamie visits Nicky at her home, where she asks Jamie to help find Tyler. Nicky is worry about him, because her mother think he is on drugs when he was last seen at Hell's Kitchen. She confirms that Tyler occasionally uses pot (but denies using it herself). Jamie says that Tyler's whereabouts (35th and 10th) is a sketchy area, as Nicky hands over a photo of herself with Tyler. Nicky then lies to Jamie, in that Erin knows about asking for Jamie's help to find Tyler. Jamie agrees to help. Gormley is briefing everyone at the precinct. He reads the Commissioner's prepared statement about tampering with Tomlin's locker, where he orders Tomlin's belonging to be returned to the CP's office by midnight, or "there will be hell to pay". Gormley concludes the briefing by telling everyone owes it to Tomlin to do the right thing. Danny and Baez go through the data on their desks. Baez then comes across a document, where TARU discovers a series of "steamy messages" between Ticky and a girl named Vivian. The messages reveal that Vivian's brother is Castillo. Baez immediately calls Central Booking, wanting to bring Ticky back for further questioning. Jamie and Eddie begins patrolling. When Eddie asks why Jamie picks to do this area, he says he wants to help Nicky and Erin by finding Tyler in a sketchy area, and provides her with Tyler's descriptions. At the interrogation room, Ticky is at lost about why he is there. He still refuses to provide any information on his boss. Danny then brings out a cell phone, where he and Baez take turns reading steamy texts between Ticky and Vivian. Danny asks for Vivian's location by threatening to revealing their relationship to Castillo. With a warrant, Danny and Baez lead a team of officers into Vivian Vasquez's apartment. While officers search her apartment, Danny and Baez questions Vivian (formerly Dolores Castillo, but changed her name when her brother forced her to). Vivian denies being Castillo's brother. As she claims to be alone in her apartment, other officers finds Castillo, who has been hiding in the tub. Castillo is even more infuriated when Danny tells him that one of his thugs is sleeping with his sister. Danny and Baez bring Castillo to the precinct. While being escorted into the cell, Castillo wishes to speak to a lawyer. Danny then asks for the name of the mole inside the precinct. Castillo says that if that is what Danny truly believes that there is a mole, then how Tomlin's cover is blown will never be known. An officer walks suspiciously away from the cell to the locker room, which catches Danny's attention. As this officer, who Danny identifies as Becker, opens his locker, Danny puts his hand on his neck, and accuses Becker of being the mole. Becker admits to opening Tomlin's locker, but has nothing more to say. At a meeting with the Commissioner at 1PP, Officer Bill Becker is told of the list of possible charges against him. He then admits to cleaning out Tomlin's locker. However, he denies being Castillo's mole, and does not know how Tomlin's covered was blown. When Frank asks further questions, Becker reveals that he owes Tomlin for saving his life from a robbery gunfight six years ago. He explains that cleaning out Tomlin's locker is to hide the fact that Tomlin "has another family". At the Reagans residence, Nicky and Jamie are in the kitchen, preparing for Sunday dinner. Jamie says he saw Tyler near the location Erin provided, where "he was taken to a trash can". Jamie says he did not take Tyler home, because Tyler ran away after pushing Eddie to the ground. After overhearing the conversation, Erin enters the kitchen, and is angry at Nicky for going behind Erin's back. Jamie is surprised to find out. Nicky explains that this was done to make sure Tyler is found. Erin angrily ends the conversation and leaves the kitchen. Jamie does the same, disappointed. At the Sunday dinner table, Erin notices her father's lack of appetite. Danny notices tension between Erin and Nicky, but neither goes into detail. Henry makes a sarcastic comment about Tomlin's family situation, which causes Frank to ask Jack and Sean to go eat in the kitchen (Nicky joins them as well). After they leave, Henry does not "pussyfoot around it", and is clearly unsympathetic about the situation. Danny informs Erin that Tomlin has a wife and two daughters living on Staten Island, and a girlfriend with a baby living in Jersey. Linda believes that Tomlin's girlfriend probably know what is going on. Danny believes that the situation is messy. Frank agrees, and also believes it is not over because of the upcoming funeral, which Henry will not attend. Jamie disagrees, and is "reserving judgement until the smoke clears a little". While siding Grandpa, since Danny is the detective assigned on the case, he reluctantly agrees to Frank's request to pass on some of Tomlin's personal items to his girlfriend. At the 12th precinct, Eddie delightfully informs Jamie that they have been assigned Hell's Kitchen again, and he will have another chance to help Nicky by finding Tyler. Jamie thinks it is doubtful that Tyler will be hanging out at Hell's Kitchen again, but Eddie received information from Narcotics that, when executing a warrant in the area that morning, Tyler was seen running from the scene. They agree to keep finding Tyler. Danny pays a visit to the home of Tomlin's girlfriend, Marianna. He gives her some of Tomlin's belongings, including a photo of them. He then asks questions about her relationship with Tomlin. She claims that Tomlin was never home at night, citing (according to her) his undercover work. She also thinks he is single, and never saw him with a ring. Danny tells Marianna the truth, that Tomlin is married, with two children in their 20s. At first, she is in disbelief, thinking that Tomlin had plans on marrying her. But Danny proves Tomlin's love to her by showing her document found in his locker. It is a "deferred compensation" form with her and their daughter, Angela, as beneficiaries (but Danny is unsure if the form has been processed yet). Near Hell's Kitchen, Eddie sees Tyler. When she tries catching Tyler, he runs off, but is caught by Jamie, who is awaiting for him at the other side. While searching Tyler, Jamie asks if he there is any drugs and sharps on him, which Tyler denies. Tyler explains that he is around Hell's Kitchen to see if anyone these has seen his mother, who was there a week ago "to score", but has not returned home since. At Staten Island, Frank drops off Tomlin's personal belongings to Lorraine, including his uniform and a photo with his two daughters. After a moment, Lorraine asks Frank to stop lying. She is disgusted with the fact that Frank and his colleagues will not admit to her husband's extramarital affairs, something that she has known for over a year. She says that once she found out, she "did whatever a good wife does", except for calling an unrecognized number on her husband's phone (who she thought was his mistress), and berated whoever received the call. She ends the exchange with Frank by asking him not to attend her husband's funeral, citing that he is insincere. With Frank somberly pondering at his office, Garrett enters with "good news": after checking Tomlin's financials, he has not submitted his deferred compensation form, thereby making it invalid. Thus, his family in Staten Island will receive all of his money and benefits. Garrett explains that this is "good news" because it will prevent the department from lawsuits or unflattering headlines. Frank is unhappy with the Garrett only being concerned about the image of the NYPD, and also the department being unsympathetic with Marianne, who is carrying "a cop's baby". Although Garrett welcomes any assistance to Tomlin's girlfriend, he says there's nothing the department can do. Nicky comes the 12th precinct, at Jamie's request (after Erin did not answer the phone). Jamie says he forgives Nicky, and then shows him Tyler in the pantry. Nicky is relieved, and immediately goes to embrace Tyler. He comes clean about his problems: his mother has a drug addiction that began with prescription drugs. He initially did not ask for help, fearing that people at school will find out, but concedes that everyone will know once his mom is dead. Jamie assures Tyler that his mom's status is unclear, but Tyler is resigned to the fact that his mom may have died, because nobody can find her. Erin then comes in, and tells everyone that she has found Mrs Jeffries, who has been hospitalized at Bellevue for accidental overdose (as Jane Doe). Erin has also contacted Tyler's uncle from Rhode Island, where he will stay until his mother gets cleaned. Tyler expresses great gratitude to everyone, as Erin take Tyler and Nicky to see Mrs. Jeffries. Over drinks at home, Frank asks Henry to financially help Tomlin's "second family", as that three-month-old baby will need more than "cash in a cigar box". Danny enters the house, and joins in on the lobbying. Henry reluctantly agrees to use his influence as a board member of the Policemen's Fund to help. Danny then shares new information on Tomlin's death to Frank and Henry. He asks Marianna to confirm that Lorraine called. But it turns out, the unrecognized number that Lorraine called was actually a member of Castillo's gang. This leads to blowing her husband's cover, and ultimately, his death. Henry is distraught about how this will affect Lorraine. Danny is against informing her, but Frank says he cannot lie to her again. Frank visits Lorraine again at her Staten Island home. At first, she is uninterested in talking further, Frank claims to have more to say. He first apologizes for how the previous day's conversation went, but he is unable to tell her the truth, only saying that it would be an honor if the NYPD has representation at the funeral.
